Urgent £150,000 Appeal to create Groundbreaking Centre for Disabled Children

Building for the Future (BFTF), a cornerstone of support for disabled children and young people across Berkshire, is announcing an ambitious £150,000 fundraising campaign to complete our new, state-of-the-art community centre: The Ability Hub.

Since 2014, the charity’s current home, ‘Our House’, has been a vital sanctuary for nearly 1,000 disabled children and young adults every year.

However, skyrocketing demand and a critical lack of accessibility have pushed the service to a breaking point. With only four parking spaces remaining due to local developments (a massive barrier for families transporting children with complex needs and heavy equipment) we have taken a 'leap of faith' to move to a significantly larger facility near Reading.

The new centre, The Ability Hub, is designed to be a world-class facility featuring:

  • A State-of-the-Art Play Therapy Centre: Tailored to the sensory and physical needs of every child.

  • An Incredible Sensory Garden: A safe, outdoor haven for exploration and peace.

  • A Launchpad for Young Adults: A dedicated space for disabled young people to develop life skills, socialise and find their purpose as they transition into adulthood.

“For more than a decade we have been a lifeline for families who often feel sidelined elsewhere,” says Jane Holmes, CEO at Building for the Future.

“But right now, the walls are closing in. We are seeing more children and young people than ever, yet our rooms are cramped and our families are struggling just to park their cars. The Ability Hub is our answer to that crisis, but we have a £150,000 mountain to climb by this summer to make it a reality.”

The refurbishments are already underway, but the final £150,000 is urgently needed to install specialist medical-grade equipment, complete the sensory garden and ensure the facility can meet the increased running costs of a bespoke hub for children and young people with disabilities - and their families.

BFTF is calling on the Berkshire community, local businesses and donors to help "Unlock the Hub" and ensure that no disabled child in the county is left without a place to flourish and thrive.
