Building for the Future is delighted to announce the appointment of our new Chairman, Valerie Lynch.
With extensive experience in governance and the charitable housing sector, Valerie brings both professional expertise and a deep personal connection to our mission of supporting disabled children and their families.
Valerie describes herself as ‘a governance specialist and qualified company secretary working in the charitable non-profit housing sector.’ Her passion for housing stems from her belief that ‘every person should have access to a safe and secure home.’
Throughout her career, she has worked with organisations that build, rent, and manage affordable housing, including homes for vulnerable people.
Valerie’s journey with Building for the Future began several years ago, and she has watched the charity flourish.
“I was initially attracted to Building for the Future as I was so impressed with how well the charity was being run and the commitment of Jane and the trustees. I have seen the charity grow in its ambition over the past eight years and am truly proud to be involved.”
Taking on the Chair role feels like a natural progression for her.
“I was inspired to take on the role of the Chair as I think I have a lot to offer in terms of sound advice, pragmatism, and hope I am seen as a safe pair of hands! I am truly excited about our plans for Building Plus and the move to our new larger premises.
“I think I can bring creative ideas, common sense and have acted as a ‘critical friend’ to help the charity grow.”
Valerie is especially passionate about the charity’s inclusive ethos. “The values and mission of BfF align with my values in that we are committed to ensuring an inclusive environment is created for every child and family. I love how the charity celebrates disabled young people and sees the value of everyone regardless of disability. The support they offer families is second to none and I am amazed at the impact the charity has made to so many people. I also love how they look after parent carers.”
Looking ahead, Valerie says, “Working with my fellow trustees to deliver our ambitious growth plans. Being an ambassador for the Charity and supporting Jane in any way I can. Really excited about the future! BfF is thought of extremely highly within the community and I am really excited that we are the Mayor’s chosen charity for 2025/26.”
Valerie’s personal experiences have also shaped the perspective she brings to her new role. “I am a very young widow. My husband passed away very unexpectedly when he was only 50 years old over 11 years ago now. We had two very young teenagers who were devastated when their dad passed away. Even though this was a tragic event I think it has made me a better human being – I am more resilient, strong, empathetic, caring and independent.” She is also proud of her sons, one training to be a human rights lawyer and the other working in sustainability.

Her connection to disability is equally personal. “When I met my husband he introduced me to his younger disabled sister, Moria, who has Down Syndrome. Seeing how Moria is loved and cared for by her family and how she now leads an independent life is a joy. She excels at art, theatre and gardening. She brings joy to our life every day.”
Outside of work and volunteering, Valerie enjoys travel, fine dining, and theatre. “My waistline is the proof of how much I love fine dining! I also love travelling solo and have been fortunate enough to visit some amazing parts of the world. My other passion is the theatre. I recently reduced my working week and this has given me the opportunity to focus on my wellbeing and health which is a blessing.”
Above all, Valerie feels privileged to serve as Chair. “I am excited to be seen as a committed advocate for Building for the Future and working on our long-term purpose and strategy which feels like a privilege and I am very fortunate to be given this opportunity.”
