Pushing through sickness and pain to raise nearly £2,000 in Reading Half Marathon – Scott’s story

PC Scott Taylor, a dedicated officer based at Harwell, laced up his running shoes and took on the Reading Half Marathon – not just for the challenge, but for something deeply personal.

Through his incredible effort, he raised an impressive £1,970 for our charity Building for the Future, an organisation that he feels has made a real difference to his and his daughter’s life.

Scott’s inspiration came from his daughter, Rosie, who was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and global developmental delay at three years’ old.

Despite life’s challenges, both dad and daughter find comfort and community at Building for the Future’s Play Therapy Centre ‘Our House’, a safe, welcoming space for children with additional needs and their families.

“It’s a little daunting going in as a dad on my own, but I found the staff really welcoming and they made me feel comfortable and more importantly Rosie loves it!”

Training for a half marathon was no small task, and just days before the race, Scott was hit with illness. But giving up wasn’t an option.

“I fell ill two days before and could hardly eat, which wasn't ideal. But after all money raised, training I'd done and people coming out to cheer me on, I had to just get it done.”

One moment during the race stood out above all: “The adrenaline on the day got me through and over finish line.

“I managed to see Rosie and my son Arthur at about the eight mile point and stopped and got a lovely picture with Rosie. And the best bit was she smiled, acknowledged me, and looked right at me for the pic.

“As a parents of an autistic child this isn't always the case so that pushed me on to the end!”

Smiles from his children and the support of colleagues and the community inspired Scott to carry on beyond this year’s event.

“I didn't get the time I wanted, but main thing was the money raised and getting it finished for Rosie. Gonna go again next year for sure!!”

Thanks to his efforts, Building for the Future can continue to provide essential support to families just like his.
